  • Three Sharks Receive 2012 ITA All-Academic Honors

    BOSTON, Mass. -- Sophomores Allison Bodek (Lynnfield, Mass.) and Margaret Teague (Manchester, N.H), and freshman Heather Rotti (Clinton, Mass.) each were named to the 2012 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team announced Friday. Bodek and Teague received the award for the second-straight year.

    BOSTON, Mass. -- The Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) honored 618 student athletes from 14 institutions on its 2011-2012 All-Academic Team announced this afternoon. Forty-five Simmons athletes received the honor, with representation from all eight varsity programs sponsored by the GNAC.

    CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Simmons tennis was defeated 9-0 by the MIT Engineers Saturday afternoon. MIT (10-6) was in control in the doubles matches, winning at No. 3 by an 8-0 score and at No. 2, 8-2. The closest of the matches came at No. 1 where the MIT team of sophomores Lauren Quisenberry and Julia Hsu took down the Simmons (12-5) team of junior Sabrina Salmela (Beverly, Mass.) and sophomore Allison Bodek (Lynnfield, Mass.), 8-3.

    BOSTON, Mass. – Simmons freshman Nicole Eskenazi (Goleta, Calif.) was named Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tennis Rookie of the Year Monday, as the GNAC announced its 2011 All-Conference tennis teams. Eskenazi went 18-0 in the conference in her rookie campaign and was an integral part of the Sharks undefeated championship season.

The Sharks will host the GNAC Championship match tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. vs. the winner of Emerson College and Emmanuel College.

    PAXTON, Mass. – The Simmons College women’s tennis team defeated Anna Maria, 9-0, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match-up Wednesday afternoon at the Paxton Sports Centre. With the win Simmons improves to 10-3 overall and remain undefeated in conference play (9-0) and the AMCATS drop to 5-8 (2-5 GNAC). The victory also increases the Sharks winning streak to 10 games, a program best.

    BOSTON, Mass. -- Simmons junior Sabrina Salmela (Beverly, Mass.) was named Great Northeast Athletic Conference Player of the Week Monday by the GNAC. Salmela had a stellar week for the Sharks, posting a 4-0 record. She won her singles match at the #1 position against rival Emmanuel, and went on to claim a victory in her #1 doubles match where she teamed up with sophomore Andree Sime (Bradenton, Fla.). Salmela finished her undefeated week by winning her #1 singles match against Johnson and Wales University, 6-3, 6-0, after winning her doubles match 8-1.

    CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Simmons Tennis moved to 6-3 overall and 5-0 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Sunday with a win over the Johnson and Wales University Wildcats 7-2 in conference play. Shouldering the loss, the Wildcats fall to 3-4 overall and 2-1 in the GNAC. Due to the potential for rain, the match was moved to the inside courts at MIT.

    BOSTON, Mass. – The Simmons Sharks handed Emmanuel College Women’s Tennis its first loss of the 2011 season this afternoon, falling 8-1. The local rivalry featured both Colleges of the Fenway (COF) teams playing on their home courts at the Winsor School. The Sharks jumped out to an early 2-1 lead after the doubles action and then swept all six singles matches to remain unbeaten in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference.

    CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Simmons Tennis defeated the Emerson College Lions 6-3 on Saturday on the courts at MIT to remain undefeated in the GNAC. The young Lions showed talent and poise, taking some tough matches from the Sharks, but their effort was unsuccessful. The Sharks moved to 4-3 overall and 3-0 in the GNAC while the Lions are now 2-3 overall and 2-1 in GNAC conference action.
