Fontaine Lifts Sharks Over Springfield

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. ? Simmons Tennis moved to 6-3 overall and 5-0 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Sunday with a win over the Johnson and Wales University Wildcats 7-2 in conference play. Shouldering the loss, the Wildcats fall to 3-4 overall and 2-1 in the GNAC. Due to the potential for rain, the match was moved to the inside courts at MIT.

In doubles play, Allison Bodek (Lynnfield, Mass.) and Sabrina Salmela (Beverly, Mass.) came back from a 6-3 deficit to win 9-7 and give Simmons a 2-1lead heading into the singles matches.

Amy Buttarazzi defeated Spenser Bowers (Belchertown, Mass.) to tie the match at two and Rachel Sweeney (Norfolk, Mass.) fell to Siana Green 6-1, 6-2. Andree Sime (Bradenton, Fla.) tied the match at three, defeating Senecal 6-1, 6-2 as all three remaining matches went into three sets. Bodek held on to win in the number two position 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 and Simmons regained the lead 4-3.

Sam Carney defeated Salmela in a tough fight, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 at #1 singles to even the score at four.

The match came down to #5 singles where Erin Fontaine (Cohasset, Mass.) had a come-from-behind 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory to lift Simmons over the Pride, 5-4.

Fontaine's win marked her first collegiate singles victory.

The Sharks return to the court on April 28th when they host Endicott College at 3:00 p.m.
