Sharks Tennis Sweep Weekly GNAC Awards

BOSTON, Mass. -- Simmons junior Sabrina Salmela (Beverly, Mass.) was named Great Northeast Athletic Conference Player of the Week Monday by the GNAC. Salmela had a stellar week for the Sharks, posting a 4-0 record. She won her singles match at the #1 position against rival Emmanuel, and went on to claim a victory in her #1 doubles match where she teamed up with sophomore Andree Sime (Bradenton, Fla.). Salmela finished her undefeated week by winning her #1 singles match against Johnson and Wales University, 6-3, 6-0, after winning her doubles match 8-1.

Freshman Nicole Eskenazi (Goleta, Calif.) was named GNAC Rookie of the Week on Monday after a 4-0 week for the Sharks. Eskenazi defeated Emmanuel's Jenna Reid in straight sets Tuesday at the #4 position, and partnered with Allison Bodek (Lynnfield, Mass.) to take the point in #2 doubles. She defeated Johnson and Wales Wildcats Dana Trimborn 6-4, 6-3, before joining classmate Kristi Mielbye (Hanson, Mass.) for the win in doubles. This is Eskenazi's second conference nod this season.

The Sharks are the only undefeated team in the GNAC at 5-0 (6-3 overall). The team travels to Suffolk University for conference match Wednesday at the BB&N School at 6:30 p.m.
