Sharks Tennis Shines at NEWITT

AMHERST, Mass. ? In preparation for the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tournament that begins next week, the Simmons tennis team competed in the New England Women?s Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) this weekend, posting a 3-7 singles record and 2-3 record in doubles versus players from Brandeis University, Williams College, Curry College, and Springfield College.

AMHERST, Mass. – In preparation for the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tournament that begins next week, the Simmons tennis team competed in the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) this weekend, posting a 3-7 singles record and 2-3 record in doubles versus players from Brandeis University, Williams College, Curry College, and Springfield College.

Sharks Margaret Teague (Manchester, N.H) defeated Roberta Bergstein 9-7 in singles play while teammate Allison Bodek (Lynnfield, Mass.) was edged by Simone Vandroff 9-8. However, Teague and Bodek came back and were victorious over Bergstein and Vandroff in doubles action, 8-3.

Junior Sabrina Salmela (Beverly, Mass.) played an impressive match against nationally ranked Kristin Alotta from Williams College, falling 8-4. Later in the day, Salmela bounced back, defeating Megan Mulrooney from Curry College, 6-2, 6-3. Salmela joined forces with Andree Sime (Bradenton, Fla.) to defeat Emily Mongello and Mulrooney 8-6 in doubles.

Sharks freshman Kristi Mielbye (Hanson, Mass.) fell 8-2 to Springfield's Siana Green in singles and teamed up with classmate Nicole Eskenazi (Goleta, Calif.) in doubles in a closely contested match before falling 8-4 to Springfields Green and Erin Woodbury.

Simmons enters the GNAC tournament undefeated at 8-0 in the conference and on a 10-game win streak, a program best. The Sharks look to defend their Championship title from last season. The quarterfinals will be played on Wednesday, October 19th followed by the semifinals on Saturday, October 22nd.
