  • Nine Sharks Named to NFHCA National Academic Squad

    BOSTON, Mass. -- Simmons field hockey had nine student-athletes make the 2011 Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Collegiate National Academic Squad for Division II announced Monday. The National Academic Squad recognizes those student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the first semester of the 2011-12 academic year.

    HENNIKER, N.H.—New England College forward Emily Kuchta (Norwalk, Conn.) netted the lone goal of the evening leading the Pilgrims past the visiting Simmons Sharks 1-0 Saturday afternoon in NAC conference play. With the win the Pilgrims improve to 4-6 overall and 3-2 in North Atlantic Conference (NAC). The loss drops the Sharks to 5-7 overall and 0-4 in the NAC.

    FARMINGTON, Maine – Sharks Field Hockey was defeated 1-0 by the University of Maine at Farmington Beavers Saturday in NAC Conference play. The win moved the Beavers to 1-0 in the conference, while the Sharks dropped to 0-2.

    BOSTON, Mass. – NEWMAC conference rival Wheaton College defeated the Sharks 3-1 in field hockey action Sunday at The Winsor School fields. Tracy McCann (Westerly, RI) scored just 7:55 into the first half on a pass from Bonnie Davis (Roxbury, Conn.) to give the Lyons the lead. Jenna Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass.) scored her first goal of the game four minutes later to increase the Lyons lead to two. The Sharks saw quality chances on three penalty corners in the first half but Lyons goalkeeper Ellie Massengill (Amherst, Mass.) denied each effort by the Sharks offense.

    CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Simmons Field Hockey suffered their first loss of the season to host MIT in non-conference field hockey action on Jack Barry field Thursday night. Six different players for the Engineers found the back of the net in the 6-0 win. Kameron Klauber (Carlsbad, Calif.) led the way with a goal and three assists to help the Engineers improve to 4-0 to start the season.

The Sharks jumped out to 2-0 lead on goals from freshman Kelly Williamson (Natick, Mass.), and Katelyn Tighe, (Easton, Mass.). Freshman Mercedes Godin (Essex Jct., Vt.) completed the first half scoring with her first collegiate goal.

    Simmons Field Hockey is gearing up for their second season under Head Coach Amanda Maxwell. The Sharks finished the 2010 season with an overall record of 6-11 and went 2-5 in the North Atlantic Conference. With multiple one-goal losses on close calls throughout the 2010 season, the team will strive to turn the tight games into wins this fall. “As the season progressed, we grew as a team both on and off the field and really started to learn to be competitive” said Maxwell.
