PAXTON, Mass. – Simmons field hockey (12-3, 8-3 GNAC) defeated Anna Maria College (3-12, 3-8 GNAC), 2-1, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) on Saturday afternoon.

The Sharks controlled the game from the opening whistle and peppered the Amcat goalkeeper with five shots on the cage in the opening stanza, including a pair from senior Aria Badra. They carried their offense momentum into the second quarter.

After being awarded back-to-back penalty corners at the start of the second quarter and nothing coming to fruition, the Sharks final broke the stalemate in the 21st minute. Sophomore  Zoe Schmaling connected with Sydney Gonyea, for her 13th goal of the season, to put Simmons in front, 1-0.

Carrying a one-goal lead into the halftime, the Sharks added an insurance goal midway through the third quarter when the teams returned to the field. Gonyea found fellow classmate, junior Anna Tedeschi in front of the net to put the Sharks in front, 2-0, and they never looked back.

The Amcats broke up the shutout scoring two minutes into the fourth quarter, but the Sharks defense minimized the damage and kept Anna Maria off the board for the remainder of the game. Making her seventh start in goal, first-year goalkeeper Haley Bright improved to 6-3 on the season.
