Field Hockey Blanks Dean, 7-0, for Eighth Shutout of the Season

BRIGHTON, Mass. – Simmons field hockey (11-3, 7-3 GNAC) shutout Dean College (2-14, 1-9 GNAC), 7-0, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Wednesday evening.

The Sharks set the tone jumping out to the quick 1-0 advantage nearly four minutes into the contest. Junior forward Sydney Gonyea knocked in the eventual game-winner into the back of the cage 3:44 into the contest. It remained a one-goal game until midway through the second quarter when fellow junior Anna Tedeschi added an insurance to send Simmons into the half with the 2-0 lead.

When the teams returned to the field at the start of the second half, the Sharks were off to the races. Five minutes into the third period Gonyea added her second goal of the game, before connecting with first-year Ava Kahl in the 40th minute to give the Sharks a 4-0 need.

Simmons continued to pile on the goals. A minute later, junior Hannah Groves found Tedeschi to increase the Shark lead to five. Groves added a goal of her own just before the third quarter ended, firing a shot into the cage on a pass from junior Alison Michalik

The Sharks capped the scoring with nine minutes left in the game. Gonyea notched her second assist of the game, connecting with Grove for the seventh goal and propel the Sharks to their 11th victory of the season.

SIMMONS HIGHLIGHTS

  • Junior forward Sydney Gonyea notched a pair of goals and two assists for six points.
  • Junior Hannah Groves also tallied two goals on the evening, while assisting on one for five points.
  • Junior Alison Michalik registered her first assist of the season connecting with Groves in the final minute of the third quarter
