Wheaton Lyons Roar Past Sharks

BOSTON, Mass. ? NEWMAC conference rival Wheaton College defeated the Sharks 3-1 in field hockey action Sunday at The Winsor School fields. Tracy McCann (Westerly, RI) scored just 7:55 into the first half on a pass from Bonnie Davis (Roxbury, Conn.) to give the Lyons the lead. Jenna Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass.) scored her first goal of the game four minutes later to increase the Lyons lead to two. The Sharks saw quality chances on three penalty corners in the first half but Lyons goalkeeper Ellie Massengill (Amherst, Mass.) denied each effort by the Sharks offense.

BOSTON, Mass. ? Senior midfielder Lee Sutherland (Wolfeboro, N.H.) scored four goals and assisted on one more as the Sharks edged the Husson University Eagles, 7-6, in a North Atlantic Conference thriller Saturday afternoon.

Simmons freshman Merecedes Godin (Essex Junction, Vt.) scored her second goal of the year on an assist by senior Katelyn Tighe (Easton, Mass.) to the cut the deficit in half. Lee Sutherland (Wolfeboro, Mass.) and Meghan Fay (Foxboro, Mass.) were instrumental in the Sharks transitions but Wheaton's Rocha found the back of the net in the 50th minute with the only goal of the second half to secure the win for the Lyons. Sharks goalkeeper Renna Smith (Belfast, Maine) had 12 saves in the loss.

Simmons Field Hockey returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Bay Path College for a 4:00 p.m. non-conference game, while Wheaton will travel to Bridgewater State for a 1:00 p.m. contest on Sunday.
