    CLERMONT, Fla. -- Simmons Softball opened their 2013 campaign with a 6-4 victory over the Salve Regina Seahawks Sunday afternoon in Clermont, Fla. The Sharks took a two-run lead in the top of the seventh off a two run homer by Emily Cunningham (Cotuit, Mass.) but the Seahawks (1-3) tied the game with a two-run home run by Sara Nelson to send the game into the eighth.

    BOSTON, Mass. -- Simmons Softball will look to build upon their success in 2012 where the Sharks finished as one of the top teams in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference with a conference record of 19-7. The Sharks continued their competitive run in the ECAC Tournament where they were seeded 7th and posted victories over both the #2 and #5 seeds to compete in the semifinals.

The Sharks will look to build around the arm of the 2012 GNAC Rookie of the Year Lauren Backhaus (Windsor, Conn.) and the 2012 GNAC Player of the Year offensive powerhouse Emily Cunningham (Cotuit, Mass.).
