Cordeiro Throws No Hitter as Sharks Split in Clermont

CLERMONT, FLA. -- Simmons sophomore Amanda Cordeiro (Fall River, Mass.) threw a no hitter as the Sharks trumped the Rhode Island College Anchormen, 12-0 in five innings Tuesday afternoon.

CLERMONT, FLA. -- Simmons sophomore Amanda Cordeiro (Fall River, Mass.) threw a no hitter as the Sharks trumped the Rhode Island College Anchormen, 12-0 in five innings Tuesday afternoon. The Sharks went 1-1 on the day, falling to the Keene State College Owls, 5-3 in a rainy morning matchup before run ruling the Anchormen for their third win of the week.

 

Keene State College 5, Simmons 3:

In the morning game, the Sharks got on the scoreboard first as Owls pitcher Mariah Crisp first walked Ari King (Westford, Mass.). Emily Cunningham (Cotuit, Mass.) stepped up to plate with one out and hit her first double of the season to right center as King scored from first. The Sharks held the Owls scoreless in the bottom of the first but the game was put on a rain delay in the bottom of the second for two hours.

As the storm passed, the game resumed in the bottom of the second with one out and bases loaded for Keene State. Stephanie Long reached first on an error by the Sharks left fielder to score all three runs and give the Owls a 3-1 lead. 

The Sharks loaded the bases in the top of the third as King walked for a second time and Hannah Cunningham (Cotuit, Mass.) and E. Cunningham each hit singles but Simmons was unable to convert. The Owls had a chance to increase their lead in the bottom of the inning as Nicole Dupuis singled through the left side but Lauren Backhaus (Winsor, Conn.) struck out one and Alaina DeNoncour (Johnston, R.I.) threw out two at first to end the inning.

Simmons tied the game in the top of the fourth as Backhaus led off with a triple and Cailin Pagel(Dorchester, Mass.) smoked a double to right field to score Backhaus. E. Cunningham flied out to center field but Pagel tagged up and scored the tying run. 

The Owls scored the go ahead run off a Sharks error in the fifth and Long singled to left field in the sixth for an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to lift Keene State to a 7-5 victory.

 

Simmons 12, Rhode Island Col. 0 (Five Innings):

The Sharks took control early in game two as H. Cunningham led off with a single up the middle. Jessica Borden walked King before DeNoncour reached second on an error by the left fielder as H. Cunningham and King both crossed home plate. Freshman Heather White (Westfield, Mass.) hit her first career double to left center to score DeNoncour and Pagel singled down the right field line to score white for a four-run first inning.

In top of the second, Amanda Cordeiro and the Simmons defense were on fire, retiring all three batters without a hit. The Sharks continued their offensive streak in the bottom of the second as H. Cunningham singled down the right field line and King singled and advanced to second on the throw. E. Cunningham drilled a ball to right center and picked up two RBIs as H. Cunningham and King scored to increase the Sharks lead to six.

After a scoreless third inning, Simmons scored six runs in the fourth as Cordeiro, White, E. Cunningham, Victoria Luongo (Medford, Mass.) and Jen Field (Windham, Maine) each recorded hits for the Sharks. The Anchormen had their final opportunity in the top of the fifth but DeNoncour threw out one and Cordeiro struck out two to complete the sophomore's first no hitter of the year.

The Sharks (3-2) return to action on Thursday, March 14th vs. St. Lawrence at 3:00 p.m. and RPI at 5:00 p.m. in Clermont, Fla.
