Backhaus Named GNAC Pitcher of the Week

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. ? Simmons Softball opened their 2013 Great Northeast Athletic Conference season with a split as they defeated the University of Saint Joseph Blue Jays, 4-2 in game one but fell 6-2 in game two Thursday afternoon. The Sharks move to 6-4 overall and 1-1 in the league, while Saint Joseph is 9-5 overall and 2-2 in the GNAC.

BOSTON, Mass. -- Simmons sophomore Lauren Backhaus (Windsor, Conn.) went 3-0 in the circle helping the Sharks to a 5-1 (3-1 GNAC) record last week.

BOSTON, Mass. -- Simmons sophomore Lauren Backhaus (Windsor, Conn.) went 3-0 in the circle helping the Sharks to a 5-1 (3-1 GNAC) record last week. She logged 19 innings of work, struck out 21 batters, allowed a mere .186 batting average against, and had an ERA of just 1.11.

 

Backhaus earned GNAC wins over University of Saint Joseph (CT) and Albertus Magnus, tossing a complete-game shutout over the Falcons in an 8-0 victory in five innings on Saturday as the Sharks move to 10-4 overall and 3-1 in the GNAC.

 

The Sharks continue conference action this weekend facing Fenway rival Emmanuel on Friday night beginning at 6:30 p.m., Saturday versus Anna Maria at Lasell starting at 12:00 p.m., and Sunday, the Sharks will travel to Boston neighbor Suffolk University for a 12:00 p.m. start.
