Tennis Edged By USJ in GNAC Opener

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Simmons tennis (2-4, 0-1 GNAC) began Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action falling to the University of St. Joseph (Conn.) on the road, 5-4, on Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Jays were quick to take an 1-0 lead winning second doubles, but the Sharks answered. Third doubles tandem of senior Sara Fucillo and junior Emily Lopez evened the score, knocking off Gia Alverez and Nina Gardella, 8-4. However, the Blue Jays were able to squeak out an 8-5 win in first doubles take a 2-1 match lead. 

Reigning GNAC Player and Rookie of the Week, first-year Emilie Lapointe tied up the overall match again defeating USJ's Kathleen Gilland in first singles, 7-5, 6-0. The Blue Jays re-gained the lead once again with a win in second singles, but sophomore Laura Lowe got the best of Jillian Milo in three sets in fifth singles (6-3, 4-6, 6-1) to make it 3-3.

It was a back-and-forth match since then. USJ jumped back in front 4-3 in third singles, but Fucillo took a pair from Gia Alvarez in fourth singles to tie it at four

Despite dropping the first set of sixth singles, first-year Emma Parsons came back and took the second set from Daynah Echevarria, 6-3, but Parsons was unable to pull out the third set.

SIMMONS HIGHLIGHTS

  • First-year Emilie Lapointe won her second singles match of the season with a two-set win in first singles.
  • Senior Sara Fucillo won her third singles match of the year with a fourth singles victory.
  • Sophomore Laura Lowe's fifth set singles win was her second of the season.
