Tennis Defeats Thomas College to Win Second Straight Match

BRIGHTON, Mass. – Simmons tennis (2-2) climbed back to .500 on the young season following an 8-1 victory over Thomas College (1-2) late Friday afternoon.

A brief weather delay did not deter the Sharks, jumping out to the 2-1 match lead winning doubles. First-year Emilie Lapointe and junior Julia Perconti won their second straight doubles match defeating Lauren Smith and Keira Gilman, 8-3. In third doubles, the tandem of senior Sara Fucillo and junior Emily Lopez edged out Renee Rossi and Tracy Lopez, 8-6.

However, the Terriers were able to get the best of the Sharks in second doubles. Winning the tie-break, 9-7, Riley Pierce and Libby Forgues squeaked out the win.

In the singles portion of the evening, Lapointe made quick work of Thomas' Lauren Smith in first singles, 6-1, 6-0, to give Simmons a 3-1 lead. Fellow first-year Emma Parsons was next to blank Maya Gammon in two sets, 6-0, 6-0, while Fucillo took fourth singles from Renee Rossi.

Sophomore Laura Lowe earned her first singles victory of her collegiate career with a two-set, 6-2, 6-4, win over Tracy Lopez in fifth singles. Junior Emily Lopez took third singles from Libby Forges (6-2, 6-1), while first-year Megan Baadsgaard overcame a 0-1 hole to pull out second singles in three sets (6-7, 6-1, 10-8).
