Tennis Closes Out Fall Season with Loss to No. 2 Regis in GNAC Semifinals

WESTON, Mass. – The fall 2022 season came to a close for Simmons tennis (8-6) falling to to the second seed Regis College (8-2) in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) semifinals on Saturday afternoon.

Regis set the tone of the match early. The Pride first doubles tandem of Samantha Gevry and Kiana Thompson jumped out to a 4-1 lead on junior Olga Zhizhin and Avery Halloran and never looked back, taking the match, 8-1.

Reigning GNAC Rookie of the Week Annabelle Halloran and senior Libby Weed came into the semifinals on a hot-streak, winning their last two matches as doubles partners. The pair once again gave opponents fits on the court, pulling to as close as 6-3 against Katelyn Mogelnick and Stephanie Beatrice in second doubles, before falling, 8-3.

The Sharks third doubles duo, seniors Samantha Margolin and Leah Bonis was the match of the day to watch. With their backs against the fall, facing match point late in the match, Margolin and Bonis battled back to tie the match at 7-7 and force a tiebreak. However, the Pride's Nora Connor and Harmony Lopez was able to come out on the victors side, winning the tie-break, 8-6.

With a three-match lead the Pride only needed to win two singles matches. Mogelnicki took second singles from Bonis, 6-1, 6-2, before Kiana Thompson took first singles in two sets (6-2, 6-0) from Zhizhin.
