Tennis Seals The Third Seed In GNAC Post-Season with 5-4 Win over Lesley

BRIGHTON, Mass. – Simmons tennis (6-4, 4-1 GNAC) clinched the third seed Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) with a 5-4, come-from-behind win over Lesley University, Sunday afternoon at Daly Field.  

The Sharks found themselves in an early hole after dropping doubles, 2-1. Senior third doubles duo Sam Margolin and Leah Bonis picked up the lone doubles win defeating Joselyn Martinez and Annie Dai, 8-2. First-year Annabelle Halloran and senior Libby Weed had a tremendous opportunity to pull out the second doubles win, but came up just short, falling 8-7 (7-5).

Momentum shifted as the two teams headed into the singles portion of the afternoon, winning four of six singles matches. First-year Annabelle Hallor and sophomore Avery Halloran won fourth and fifth singles to tie the match at 3-3, but the Lynx answered. Lesley's Brook Whitten defeated Bonis in two sets in second singles to put the Lynx back on top by one, 4-3.

Margolin came through in sixth singles edging out Lesley's Jordan Blair, 6-3, 7-6 (3-1), in two sets to tie the match at four. With the match all square it came down to senior Libby Weed's third singles match against Morgan Anderson.

Weed dropped the first set to Anderson, 6-4, but answered with a 6-1 win in second set to force a deciding third set. The third set was grueling set, but Weed showed outstanding endurance and grit to pull out the 6-4 win and seal the third seed of the GNAC post-season.

SIMMONS HIGHLIGHTS

  • Senior Libby Weed won her fourth straight singles match with a match-clinching, three-set (4-6, 6-1, 6-4) win in third singles.
  • Seniors Sam Margolin and Leah Bonis remaining perfect as doubles partners, improving to 4-0 picking up the Sharks' lone doubles win, defeating Joselyn Martinez and Annie Daie, 8-2, in third doubles.
  • Senior Sam Margolin moved to 3-3 in singles on the season win sixth singles over Morgan Anderson.
