Tennis Stumbles Against Non-Conference Smith College

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Taking a two-match break from Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action, Simmons tennis (4-3) dropped a 9-0 decision to Smith College (1-0) on Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers were quick to take an early lead with a 3-0 sweep of doubles. Partnering together for the first time this season as doubles partners, senior Libby Weed and first-year Annabelle Halloran valiantly battled Marielle Sauber and Olivia Monos in second doubles. The pair took two games from Sauber and Monos before falling, 8-2.  Junior Sara Fucillo and senior Mary Miller gave Miranda Gibson and Joyce Lee a tough fight in third doubles, but ended up dropping the match 8-2.

In the singles portion of the afternoon, junior Olga Zhizhin made Clara Goshgarian work to take a 1-0 match advantage, edging out the Newton native, 6-4, in the first set. Goshgarian took the second set by a score of 6-2. First-year Annabelle Halloran responded very well after dropping the first set of fourth singles, 6-0, by nearly forcing a third set against Ashley Felix. But Felix weathered the storm, edging out Halloran, 6-4.

Junior Vanessa Camargo and Weed also had solid performances in second and third singles, respectively. Camargo fell in two sets, 6-2, 6-2, to Sauber, while Monos knocked off Weed by the same set scores, 6-2, 6-2, in third singles.
