Tennis' Four-Match Winning Streak Comes To A Halt

BRIGHTON, Mass. – Simmons tennis (4-2) suffered its second loss of the season, falling at the hands of non-conference Wheaton College (1-0) at Daly Field Wednesday afternoon.

The Lyons' jumped out in front early take first and second doubles by identical 8-0 scores, but third doubles was a different story. Senior Mary Miller and junior Sara Fucillo made Zoe West and Tessa Hammond work for the 8-4 victory.

In the singles portion of the competition, West opened with a quick two-set, 6-0, 6-1, win over sophomore Julia Perconti. Not long after the Lyons claimed third singles following Mareike Mueller's win over sophomore Avery Halloran, 6-3, 6-1. Senior Sam Margolin battled Izzy Kruse tough in fourth singles before falling, 6-3, 6-1, while first-year Annabelle Halloran took Kara Greenlee to three sets before falling.

Making her first appearance in the first singles spot, senior Libby Weed provided tough competition for the Lyons' Alissa Ortiz. Weed nearly pulled out the first set, but was edged out 7-5. Ortiz rebounded claimed the match with a 6-1 win in the second set. Sophomore Emily Lopez earned her first victory of her collegiate career with two-set, 7-6, 7-5, victory over Haylee Doiron.

  • Sophomore Emily Lopez earned her first singles victory of her collegiate career defeating Haylee Doiron in sixth singles, 7-5 (7-5), 7-5. 
  • Senior Libby Weed made her season debut at first singles and battled the Lyons Alissa Ortiz tough.
