Tennis Rolls To Their Fourth Straight Victory Defeating Albertus Magnus, 8-1

BRIGHTON, Mass. – Simmons tennis (4-1, 1-0) continues to roll winning its fourth straight game, opening Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) playing with a convincing, 8-1, victory over Albertus Magnus College (0-2, 0-1 GNAC) at Daly Field Saturday afternoon.

The Sharks wasted very little time jumping out to a 3-0 lead with a sweep of doubles. Third doubles tandem junior Sara Fucillo and sophomore Emily Lopez blanked the Falcons' Emily Perez and Nayelli Garcia, 8-0. Sophomore Avery Halloran and senior Libby Weed were not far behind with another shutout win in second doubles.

Albertus Magnus' first doubles pair made senior Leah Bonis and junior Olga Zhizhin work for the the sweep, taking the match to 14 games. But through grit and perseverance, the Sharks were able to squeak out the 8-5 win.

In the singles portion of the competition, sophomore Julia Perconti and Mary Miller sealed the match with early wins in fifth and sixth singles, respectively. Perconti made quick work of Nayelli Garcia in fifth singles, 6-0, 6-0, right before Miller knocked off Perez in sixth singles, 6-0, 6-0. 

First-year Annabelle Halloran earned her second singles win of the season, defeating Giana Cagna in third singles (6-0, 6-0), while senior Sam Margolin defeated Annamarie DeLucia in fourth singles. Bonis rounded out the Sharks with a come-from-behind victory in second singles (3-6, 6-1, 10-4) against JuJu Oliver.

SIMMONS HIGHLIGHTS

  • Third doubles duo Sara Fucillo and Emily Lopez won their second doubles match as partners, blanking Albertus' Emily Perez and Nayelli Garcia, 8-0.
  • Second doubles partners Avery Halloaran and Libby Weed also recorded a shutout to improve to 2-2 on the season as partners.
  • Senior Leah Bonis earned her first singles victory of the season with a come-from-behind, three-set victory in second singles.
