Tennis Defeated by Mount Holyoke, 9-0

BOSTON, Mass. -- The Simmons University women's tennis team fell to visiting Mount Holyoke College, 9-0, this afternoon on Daly Courts in Brighton, Mass. The Sharks fall to 2-4 on the season, while the Lyons improve to 1-0 after winning their season opener.

BOSTON, Mass. -- The Simmons University women's tennis team fell to visiting Mount Holyoke College, 9-0, this afternoon on Daly Courts in Brighton, Mass. The Sharks fall to 2-4 on the season, while the Lyons improve to 1-0 after winning their season opener.

Sophomore Sarah Mariski (Portland, Maine) led Simmons by winning five games at number three singles in a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Mount Holyoke senior Catherine Peabody (San Francisco, Calif.). 

Senior Ching-Ching Huang (Lukang Twp., Taiwan) teamed with sophomore Annissa Aamoum (Dulles, Va.) to earn an 8-1 victory at number one doubles for the Lyons over the Simmons senior combo of Nickie Nguyen (Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam/St. Joseph Prep (MA)) and Marissa Johnson (Norwell, Mass.). Huang also captured a win atop of the singles lineup for Mount Holyoke as well when she defeated Johnson, 6-1, 6-0. Aamoum picked up the first singles victory of the afternoon, blanking Sharks sophomore Megan McKeever (Stamford, Conn.) at number five, 6-0, 6-0.|

The Lyons picked up a win at second doubles, courtesy of the pairing of Peabody and junior Anya Gerasimova (Salem, Ore.) in an 8-2 triumph over the Simmons duo of McKeever and junior Carrie St. Peter (Chester, N.H.). Gerasimova tacked on a 6-1, 6-1 win at second singles for Mount Holyoke over Nguyen.

First year Shweta Kiran Cavale (Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India) combined with sophomore Hannah Middleton (Pawcatuck, Conn.) for an 8-2 victory over the Sharks first year pairing of Libby Weed (Brooksville, Maine) and Mary Miller (Newton, N.H.). Kiran followed her first collegiate doubles win with a victory in singles play as well, posting a 6-2, 6-1 win at fourth singles over Simmons rookie Leah Bonis (Bath, Maine). Middleton registered a 6-2, 6-0 triumph at sixth singles over Sharks first year Samantha Margolin (Ridgefield, Conn.) to give Mount Holyoke the fifth and deciding point for the dual match victory.

The Lyons return to the court on September 20 when they travel to Newport, R.I. to compete in the Tennis Hall of Fame Invitational, while Simmons hosts Great Northeast Athletic Conference rival Johnson & Wales University on Wednesday, September 18 at 3:00 p.m.
