Simmons Tennis Falls to Regis (Mass.), 8-1

BOSTON, Mass. ? The Simmons University women's tennis team was defeated by visiting Regis College (Mass.), 8-1, this afternoon in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference opener on Daly Courts in Brighton, Mass. The Sharks fall to 1-3 and 0-1 in league play, while the Pride improve to 2-0 and 1-0.

BOSTON, Mass. – The Simmons University women's tennis team was defeated by visiting Regis College (Mass.), 8-1, this afternoon in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference opener on Daly Courts in Brighton, Mass. The Sharks fall to 1-3 and 0-1 in league play, while the Pride improve to 2-0 and 1-0.

Regis swept doubles play to take a 3-0 lead in the dual match. 

Senior Ariana McCormack (Worcester, Mass.) and junior Carly Donovan (Harwich, Mass.) teamed for an 8-1 victory for the Pride at number one doubles over the Simmons senior duo of Nickie Nguyen (Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam/St. Joseph Prep (Mass.)) and Marissa Johnson (Norwell, Mass.)

Donovan was equally impressive at first singles with a 6-1, 6-0 decision for Regis over Nguyen. Johnson picked up the lone point for the Sharks, grinding out a 7-6 (4) first set win, before taking the second set, 6-4, for a victory at second singles over McCormack to improve her season singles mark to 3-1 and make it a 7-1 match at the time. 

Junior Ginger Boodakian (Burlington, Mass.) and sophomore Katelyn Mogelnicki (Wethersfield, Conn.) cruised to an 8-0 showing for the Pride at number two doubles over the Simmons sophomore pairing of Sarah Mariski (Portland, Maine) and Megan McKeever (Stamford, Conn.). The Regis pair also picked up wins in singles action with Mogelnicki coming back to beat Mariski at third singles in three sets. Mariski took the opening frame, 6-3, before Mogelnicki regrouped to win the final two sets, 6-2, 6-3. Boodakian was the victor at fifth singles over Sharks first year Libby Weed (Brooksville, Maine) by a count of 6-4, 6-1 to give the visitors the match's deciding point. 

Sophomore Lauren Mogelnicki joined classmate Kaitlyn Colby (Merrimac, Mass.) for an 8-5 triumph at third doubles over Simmons junior Carrie St. Peter (Chester, N.H.) and first year Samantha Margolin (Ridgefield, Conn.). Mogelnicki became the fourth member of the Pride to win both of her matches when she defeated Sharks first year Leah Bonis (Bath, Maine), 6-4, 5-7, 10-4 at fourth singles. 

Sophomore Kaeleigh Fitzpatrick (South Windsor, Conn.) was a winner at sixth singles for Regis, earning a 6-1, 6-1 decision over McKeever. 

The Pride return to the courts on September 14 when they travel to Quincy, Mass. to take on GNAC foe Eastern Nazarene College at 1:00 p.m., while Simmons travels to New London, N.H. to play GNAC opponent Colby-Sawyer College on the same day at 1:00 p.m.
