Sharks Earn 2009-10 GNAC Academic All-Conference HonorsJuly 19, 2010The Great Northeast Athletic Conference recognized 530 student-athletes from 15 league sports on the 2010 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Academic All-Conference Team. 40 Simmons athletes received the honor, and all seven of the Simmons varsity programs sponsored by the GNAC were represented on this year’s Academic All-Conference Team.

Swimming & Diving 2009-10 Season In ReviewMarch 15, 2010Simmons Swimming & Diving captured the 2009 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship for the sixth year in a row, and earned an eighth place finish at the 2010 New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association Championships. The young team was consistent in dual meets, as Simmons swam to wins against opponents the Sharks defeated last season, and suffered closer losses to opponents who defeated them one year ago.

Sharks Outstanding at NEISDA ChampionshipsMarch 01, 2010Simmons Swimming and Diving captured eighth place out of twenty-two teams with 339 points at the New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Championships on February 21. The Sharks set five program records and finished three spots higher and with 78 more points than the 2009 meet—the highest program finish for Simmons at New England’s since the 2003 season.

Sharks Speedy in Defeat of Golden BearsFebruary 01, 2010Seniors Brittany Torelli (Waterbury, Conn.) and Caitlin Urciuoli (Wethersfield, Conn.) each captured two events and earned 18 points apiece as Simmons Swimming posted a 150-110 victory over Western New England College on Saturday, January 30, at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.

Torelli Named GNAC Swimmer of the WeekJanuary 26, 2010Simmons senior Brittany Torelli (Waterbury, Conn.) was named Swimmer of the Week by the Great Northeast Athletic Conference for the week of January 18-24, 2010, the GNAC announced Monday evening.

Dirksmeier Breaks Diving Record in Loss to Lyons, 161-128January 16, 2010Simmons diver Amanda Dirksmeier (Marshfield, Mass.) achieved a new pool and team record in her 3-Meter springboard victory on Saturday afternoon. Dirksmeier’s new mark of 223.00 betters the program record of 220.35, set in 2001 by Sarah Brown, and the pool record of 2:19.15, set in 2009. Despite the loss to NEWMAC opponent Mount Holyoke, the Sharks swam well in their first meet since returning from winter training in Sarasota, Fla.

Sharks Claim 2009 GNAC Swimming & Diving ChampionshipDecember 06, 2009Boston, Mass.-- Simmons Swimming & Diving was named the 2009 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Champion on Sunday night, as the Sharks finished the two-day championship meet with 305 team points. The win, Simmons’ sixth in a row, and eighth in nine years, capped a weekend where 10 GNAC and two pool records fell in one of the fastest GNAC meets in conference history. More than 100 athletes from the GNAC’s six teams gathered at the Holmes Sports and Fitness Center at Simmons College to race for the championship title.

King Smashes Pool, Team Record in 1-Meter DivingNovember 20, 2009Simmons Diving freshman Kaira King (Las Vegas, Nev.) destroyed the pool and program mark in the 1-meter springboard diving event, and the Simmons 200 Free Relay of Virginia Bette (Southbury, Conn.), Alyssa Musket (Lincoln, R.I.), Nellie Jackson (Dorchester, Mass.) and Brittany Torelli (Waterbury, Conn.) set a new pool record of 1:47.60. Simmons Swimming and Diving battled Wellesley College at home on Friday, falling to the Blue, 161-128, despite the two record performances.

Freshman Swimmer Musket Shatters Pool, Team RecordOctober 31, 2009Simmons freshman Alyssa Musket (Lincoln, R.I.) lowered the Simmons pool and program record for the 50-yard Free on Saturday afternoon. Musket’s 25.09 broke the team mark of 25.55, set in 1995 by Tara Spellissy, and the Pool mark of 25.80, set by Spellissy in 1993. The swim came during the Sharks’ season and home opener against the Westfield State Owls, who went home with the 161-130 win.

Swimming & Diving 2009-10 Season PreviewOctober 29, 2009Simmons Swimming & Diving is preparing to open the 2009-10 season and return to competition after a successful 2008-09 campaign. Last winter, the Sharks captured the 2008 GNAC Championship—the fifth title in a row for Simmons, and the seventh in eight years for the program. Simmons also finished in 11th place at the NEISDA Championships, after qualifying a record 13 athletes for the meet.
