Swimming and Diving Opens Season with Dual Meet Victory over Westfield State University

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Simmons swimming and diving (1-0) opened the 2023-2024 campaign with a dual meet victory over Westfield State University (0-1), 135-123, on Saturday afternoon.

A close match throughout the entire afternoon, the meet came down to the final event of the afternoon. In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the Sharks A quartet of Kenzie Lowry, Bee Eckels, Katelyn Quinlan and Carli Quinlan propelled Simmons to the victory, touching the wall with a time of 1:46.22. 

Senior captain Camelia Hannah won a pair of the events for the Sharks, finishing first in the 50- (30.80) and 100-yard (1:08.08) backstroke. Sophomore Carli Quinlan also took home two first place finishes, placing first in the 100-yard freestyle (56.03) before beating out Hannah in the 50-yard butterfly, touching the wall with a collegiate-best time of 27.71.

Midway through the meet in the 100-yard breaststroke fellow captain, senior Katelyn Quinlan beat out teammate, first-year Bee Eckels by .41 of a second to claim first. with a time of 1:19.09. 

SIMMONS HIGHLIGHTS

  • Sophomore Carli Quinlan posted a collegiate top time of 27.71 in the 50 fly to wina pair of events (100 free and 50 fly), while posting a collegiate top time of 27.71.
  • Senior Camelia Hannah also earned a pair of event wins in the 50 back (30.80) and 100 back (1:08.08).
  • First-year swimmer Bee Eckels earned a pair of second place finishes in the 50 breast (36.44) and 100 breast (1:19.50).
  • First-year Anna Kelly clocked a second place finish in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:13.38.

Simmons returns to the pool next Friday, October 27 when they return to the western part of the state to face Smith College.
