Swimming and Diving Head Into December Break on High Note After Strong Showing at MIT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Simmons swimming and diving heads into the winter break on a high note after another strong day on the third and final day of the MIT Invitational on Sunday. 

After posting a time of 1:58.20 in the prelims of the 200-yard medley relay, the Sharks finished second in the C final later that evening. The quartet of Camelia Hannah, Meg Driscoll, Ella Harmon, and Lauren Howard registered a season-best time of 1:55.23, cutting three seconds of their previous best set against the University of New England. 

Senior Lauren Howard was one of two Simmons swimmer, joining teammate Meg Driscoll, to qualify for the B finals. Howard finished fifth in the B finals of 100-yard freestyle, touching the wall with a season-best time of 54.31 - dropping two seconds from her previous best on the season of 56 seconds against Merrimack before Thanksgiving. 

In the prelims of the 100-yard butterfly, first-year Ella Harmon clipped one second off her personal-best time, touching the wall with a time of 1:02.20 and qualified for the finals. That evening, competing in the C finals, Harmon clocked in with a time of 1:02.67.

The Sharks capped off the night the day with a strong performance in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Posting their best time of the year, the A-relay team of Caroline Mazariegos, Eva Piernas, Emma Serth and Lauren Howard, touched the wall with time of 3:50.88 – 10 seconds ahead of their previous top time of 4:00.15 against Wellesley last month.

SIMMONS HIGHLIGHTS

  • First-year Ella Harmon posted a personal-best time in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:02.20 in the prelims to qualify for the finals. In the evening session, Harmon touched the wall with a time of 1:02.67.
  • Simmons 200-yard medley relay team (Hannah, Driscoll, Harmon, Howard) registered a season top time of 1:55.23 in the evening finals.
  • The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Caroline Mazariegos, Eva Piernas, Emma Serth and Lauren Howard also clocked a season-best, cutting 10 seconds off their previous time, touching the wall in 3:50.88 seconds.
