CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Junior Aine Scholand (Albuquerque, N.M.) won the 1650-yard freestyle and helped the Simmons University 800-yard freestyle relay team to a third-place finish with a school-record time on Day One of the MIT Swimming & Diving Winter Invitational at the Al '51 and Barrie Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center Pool in Cambridge, Mass. The Sharks scored 106 points to place fourth, just one point behind Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Tufts University tallied 256 points to lead the meet after the opening day, while Massachusetts Institute of Technology racked up 233 points to stand second overall.

Scholand won the 1650 by more than 10 seconds with a time of 17:08.69 for Simmons, while senior Laura Simpson (Perkiomenville, Pa.) scored points with a ninth-place showing on a time of 18:21.76. The time for Scholand eclipsed the 2018 NCAA Championship invite time and also qualified as an NCAA 'B' cut mark.

The Sharks broke the school-record by nearly a full two seconds in the 800-yard freestyle relay with a mark of 7:46.36. Scholand opened the race with a 200-yard split of 1:53.92, before Simpson clocked in at 1:59.06. First year Sarah Singleton (Mission Hills, Calif.) recorded a 1:56.37 clip and senior Kerry Fleming (Northampton, Mass.) closed out the race on a split of 1:57.01. Tufts won the event with a time of 7:36.47.

All three of the Simmons divers contributed to its team score on the one-meter board, combining for 22 team points. Sophomore Sara Manjikian (Belmont, Mass.) tallied 183.25 points in a six-dive set to finish 12th, while junior Cristina Samaniego (Avon, Conn.) scored 178.35 points to post a 14th-place effort. First year Natalie Krieg (Cambridge, Mass.) recorded 163.55 points to finish 17th. MIT's Blake Zhou won the event with a score of 309.00 to win by more than 23 points.

The Sharks return to action tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. in the 200-yard freestyle relay in Day Two's preliminaries in Cambridge.
