Soraghan Named GNAC Swimming & Diving Rookie of the Week

WINTHROP, Mass. ? Simmons College?s Maria Soraghan (East Hampstead, N.H.) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Women?s Swimming & Diving Rookie of the Week for the week of October 23-29, it was announced by the league today. 

WINTHROP, Mass. ? Simmons College?s Maria Soraghan (East Hampstead, N.H.) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Women?s Swimming & Diving Rookie of the Week for the week of November 6-12, it was announced today by the league. Soraghan also earned the award for the week of October 23-29. 

WINTHROP, Mass. – Simmons College's Maria Soraghan (East Hampstead, N.H.) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Women's Swimming & Diving Rookie of the Week for the week of October 23-29, it was announced by the league today. 

The first year swimmer scored 13 points with a first and second-place finish, while helping the Sharks to a relay victory in a double-dual meet sweep over Elms College (229-41) and Gordon College (228-33) on October 28. The rookie won the 1000-yard freestyle by a full three seconds with a time of 11:05.98 and was edged in the 100-yard backstroke by less than a quarter of a second with a mark of 1:03.69. Soraghan swam the third leg of Simmons' winning effort in the 200-yard freestyle, helping the team post a time of 1:44.22. 

For the season, the Pinkerton Academy product has scored 26 points with a pair of first place efforts and two second place finishes. She made her collegiate debut on October 21 by helping the Sharks to wins in the 200-yard freestyle and medley relay events, leading off the medley and anchoring the freestyle relay in a 192-96 win over Westfield State University. Her first collegiate individual win came when she clocked in at 1:59.62 to take the 200-yard freestyle. 

Simmons is currently 3-0 on the season in dual meet action and has won 15 straight dual meets, dating back to last year's perfect 12-0 campaign. The Sharks return to the water on Saturday, November 4 when they compete in the Worcester Polytechnic Institute Invitational in Worcester, Mass. at 1:00 p.m.
