Scholand Named GNAC Women's Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week

WINTHROP, Mass. ? Simmons College?s Aine Scholand (Albuquerque, N.M.) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Women?s Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week, for the week of October 16-22, it was announced by the league. 

WINTHROP, Mass. – Simmons College's Aine Scholand (Albuquerque, N.M.) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Women's Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week, for the week of October 16-22, it was announced by the league. 

The sophomore won all three races she entered in a dual meet vs. Westfield State University on October 21 and also helped the Sharks to a victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The transfer showed her range, winning the 100, 500 and 1000-yard freestyle events. She began her Simmons career by dominating the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:51.93 to win the race by more than 30 seconds. Scholand captured the 100-yard freestyle with a mark of 57.20, before winning the 500-yard freestyle by just under five seconds with a time of 5:20.72. 

The Sandia High School graduate transferred to Simmons prior to the season from Division I Evansville University, where she was named the Purple Aces' Most Improved Newcomer following her first year of collegiate competition. She also finished sixth in the 1650-yard freestyle at the Missouri Valley Conference Championship during her rookie campaign. 

The Sharks improved to 1-0 following their season opener and extended their consecutive dual-meet win streak to 13 straight, including all 12 meets from a year ago. Simmons returns to the pool on Saturday, October 28 when it hosts Elms College and Gordon College at the Holmes Sports Center Natatorium for a 2:00 p.m. double-dual meet.
