ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Junior Miriam Swisher (Albuquerque, N.M.) shattered her own school record in the 50-yard backstroke to lead the Simmons College women's swimming & diving team's 200-yard medley relay squad post a qualifying time in the morning preliminaries for tonight's finals on day two of the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship at host United States Naval Academy's Lejeune Hall in Annapolis, Md.
Swisher erased her former mark in the 50-yard backstroke by 0.35 seconds with a time of 27 seconds flat in the opening leg of the 200-yard medley relay. The Sharks' quartet placed 11th in the race on a time of 1:51.39, just two tenths behind Division II Le Moyne College and almost three seconds ahead of Division I Adelphi University. Sophomore Natalie Giraldi (Bedford, N.H.) followed in the breaststroke leg, while classmate Michaela Morris (Duxbury, Mass.) swam the butterfly clip, before junior Sarah Price (New York, N.Y.) closed out the event as the freestyle anchor leg.
Swisher just missed serving as an alternate for tonight's 200-yard freestyle finals with a 19th-place showing on a time of 1:53.69 in the prelims. Simmons' first year Laura Simpson (Perkiomenville, Pa.) finished 42nd with a mark of 1:56.87, while Fleming was just six one-hundreths of a second behind at 1:56.93.
Giraldi placed 22nd in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:08.82 in this morning's preliminaries as well for the Sharks.
Simmons will compete in the finals of the 200-medley relay tonight at 6:00 p.m.
