Fleming Named GNAC Women's Swimming & Diving Rookie of the Week for Fourth Time

WINTHROP, Mass. ? Simmons College women?s swimmer Kerry Fleming (Northampton, Mass.) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Women?s Swimming & Diving Rookie of the Week for the week of October 19-25, it was announced today by the league.

WINTHROP, Mass. ? Simmons College women?s swimmer Kerry Fleming (Northampton, Mass.) has been named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Women?s Swimming & Diving Rookie of the Week for the week of February 22-28, it was announced by the league today.

WINTHROP, Mass. – Simmons College women's swimmer Kerry Fleming (Northampton, Mass.) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Women's Swimming & Diving Rookie of the Week for the week of January 18-24, it was announced today by the conference. 

The Sharks have earned the award in all eight of the reporting periods. Fleming has captured the distinction a league-high four times, having previously been named for the weeks of October 19-25 and November 16-22 as well as last week. Classmate Laura Simpson (Perkiomenville, Pa.) has been tabbed the weekly winner three times, while rookie Charlotte Rivard (Norwood, Mass.) was selected for the week of January 4-10 by the GNAC. 

Fleming won a pair of events to help Simmons to a 191-63 victory over host Western New England University on January 23. The first year won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 56.66 and later clocked in at 1:05.68 to earn a victory in the 100-yard individual medley. 

Fleming is the team's second-leading scorer this season, posting 25 top-three finishes, including 14 first-place showings. She has won five of seven 50-yard freestyle events, while also recording victories in the 100, 200 and 500-yard freestyle races. Fleming is unbeaten in the 100-yard individual medley with four wins in as many starts. The Northampton High School product has not lost a scoring race that she's entered since January 9 and has won six straight events. She earned double All-Conference status by winning the 50-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 25.49 at the GNAC Championship on December 5 and also claimed the title in the 100-yard IM with a personal-record time of 1:03.45. Fleming posted a career-best mark of 54.65 in the 100-yard freestyle to place second at the league championships and also finished second in the 200-yard freestyle in the championship meet with a personal-best time of 1:58.82. 

The Sharks are currently 10-1 on the season to match the school-standard for victories in a campaign and won the GNAC Championship for the 12th straight year in December. Simmons returns to the water on Saturday, January 30 when the team travels to South Hadley, Mass. to take on Mount Holyoke College at 12:00 p.m.
