Swimming & Diving Sweeps Tri-Meet with Gordon and Elms

BOSTON, Mass. ? Three swimmers won a pair of events for host Simmons College vs. both Gordon College and Elms College this afternoon to lead the Sharks to a 173.5-84.5 win over Gordon and a 209.5-39.5 triumph over Elms. Gordon defeated Elms? women, 175-62, but the Elms men?s team came from behind to win the last relay event and defeat Gordon, 126-124 this afternoon at the Holmes Sports Center Natatorium on the campus of Simmons in Boston, Mass. Simmons improves to 3-0 on the season, while the Elms women sit a 0-2 and the Gordon women are even at 1-1. The Elms men are 1-0, while the Gordon men are 0-1.

Gordon defeated Elms' women, 175-62, but the Elms men's team came from behind to win the last relay event and defeat Gordon, 126-124 this afternoon at the Holmes Sports Center Natatorium on the campus of Simmons in Boston, Mass. Simmons improves to 3-0 on the season, while the Elms women sit a 0-2 and the Gordon women are even at 1-1. The Elms men are 1-0, while the Gordon men are 0-1. 

Junior Miriam Swisher (Albuquerque, N.M.), sophomore Michaela Morris (Duxbury, Mass.) and first year Laura Simpson (Perkiomenville, Pa.) all won a pair of events for the Sharks against both teams. Swisher won the 50-yard freestyle by almost a full second with a time of 25.39 in addition to hitting the wall first by over five seconds in the 100-yard backstroke with a mark of 1:03.59. Morris won both butterfly events, taking the 100-yard in 1:03.21, before winning the 50-yard with a time of 28.74. Simpson made her mark in the freestyle events with a win in the 200-yard by more than five seconds on a time of 2:01.18 and the 500-free by almost 12 seconds in 5:28.43. 

Senior Kevyn Lee (New York City, N.Y.) defeated both teams for the Sharks with a 12:01.47 showing in the 1000-yard freestyle, while first year Jason Erichsen (Banks, Ore.) earned the best time in the 100-yard breaststroke with a mark of 1:17.33 to win his first collegiate event. Sophomore Natalie Giraldi (Bedford, N.H.) also posted the top time in the 100-yard individual medley for Simmons at 1:05.42. Junior diver Alison Gauvin (Whitefield, Maine) was the top diver in the meet with a career-best score of 162.30 in six dives on the one-meter board. 

First year Caris Lyons (Orrville, Ohio), senior Nicole St. Martin (Westport, Mass.) and junior Alex Hall (Boca Raton, Fla.) all earned event wins over both teams for Gordon. Hall won the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 32.07, while St. Martin clocked in at 34.93 to take the 50-yard breaststroke. Lyons won the 100-yard freestyle by almost two seconds with a time of 57.65. 

First year Kayla Gurney (Wilbraham, Mass.) earned a pair of second-place efforts in the 100-yard breaststroke for Elms, coming in at 1:18.30 behind Erichsen, and the 50-yard breastroke as she tied with Simmons junior Jordan Mattheisen (Seattle, Wash.) with a time of 35.35. 

The Sharks won both of the relay events with Morris, Giraldi, first year Charlotte Rivard (Norwood, Mass.) and Swisher combining for a time of 1:57.05 in the 200-yard medley relay. First year Kerry Fleming (Northampton, Mass.) joined classmate Laura Simpson, Swisher and Giraldi to put together a win in the 200-yard freestyle on a mark of 1:45.43. 

Gordon led through the first eight events of the men's meet until senior James Grippo (Longmeadow, Mass.) scored nine of his 16 points on the day on a first-place showing in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:03.03 to give Elms an 80-79 edge. The teams were later tied at 98-98 after junior Ryan Burgos (Plaistow, N.H.) registered the second of two first-place finishes, winning the 500-yard freestyle by more than 10 seconds at 5:22.65 for Elms. Junior Langdon Kessner (Rochester, N.Y.) responded for Gordon. Elms closed to within three points following a first-place effort in the 100-yard IM from senior Misha Kuyuzov (Swampscott, Mass.) on a time of 1:00.06 to set up the final relay for the meet. Junior Nick Cirillo (Gloversville, N.Y.), Burgos, first year Michael Grippo (Longmeadow, Mass.) and Kuyuzov combined to turn in a winning time of 1:35.18 in the 200-yard freestyle relay to out-touch Gordon by just over six-tenths of a second to win the meet for Elms. 

Burgos finished with 21 points to lead Elms, including a first-place effort by over 42 seconds in the 1000-yard freestyle. Cirillo posted 17 points and also took home a first-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 51.37 to go with two second place finishes as well. Michael Grippo earlier won the 50-yard freestyle in 25.08 for Elms. 

Junior Daniel Fauber (Granbury, Texas) and senior Joshua Florez (West Hartford, Conn.) each racked up two victories on the day for Gordon. Fauber showed his versatility by winning the 200-yard freestyle in 1:48.34 and later earned a win in the 100-yard butterfly with a mark of 52.72 to win by almost 14 seconds. Florez dominated the breaststroke, winning the 50-yard event in 29.20, before taking the 100-yard race in 1:03.93. Senior Cameron Schofield (Middleboro, Mass.) also earned a win for Gordon, finishing ahead of the field in the 50-yard backstroke. 

Simmons returns to the pool on Saturday, November 7 when it head to Worcester, Mass. to compete in the New England Invitational hosted by Worcester Polytechnic Institute at 1:00 p.m. Gordon travels to Wenham, Mass. on the same day for dual meet action with Regis College at 1:00 p.m., while Elms hosts Saints Joseph's College (Maine) at 1:00 p.m. on the same day as well.
