Swimming & Diving Breaks 200-Freestyle Relay Record on Day One of ECAC Championship Preliminaries

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Simmons College women's swimming & diving team saw three entries qualify for the finals of the 2015 Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship this evening following the morning's preliminaries session at Trees Pool at the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, Pa.

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Simmons College women's swimming & diving team saw three entries qualify for the finals of the 2015 Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship this evening following the morning's preliminaries session at Trees Pool at the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, Pa. 

Both of the Sharks' relay teams that swam in the preliminaries have qualified for tonight's finals, while sophomore Miriam Swisher (Albuquerque, N.M.) advanced to the B-Finals of the 50-yard freestyle.

Simmons began the morning by breaking the school record in the 200-yard freestyle relay by one one-hundreth of a second. Swisher swam the lead leg, followed by seniors Joleigh Ferro (Pittsfield, Mass.) and Chloe Davis (Merrimack, N.H.) and sophomore Shylee Stewart (Eastham, Mass.) swam the anchor leg to combine for a time of 1:38.95 to place eighth and qualify for the finals.

Swisher hit the wall with a season-best time of 24.01 in the 50-yard freestyle for a 14-place finish, while first year Natalie Giraldi (Bedford, N.H.) posted a personal-record mark of 25.10 to finish 35th.

The Sharks capped the morning's preliminaries with a sixth-place showing in the 400-yard medley relay after registering a time of 4:00.77 to advance to the finals. Swisher swam the backstroke leg, followed by Giraldi's breaststroke split and first year Michaela Morris' (Duxbury, Mass.) laps in the butterfly and Stewart's final leg in the freestyle.

Simmons will compete in tonight's finals at 6:00 p.m.
