Sharks Sweep Plymouth State, 179-98

BOSTON, Mass. -- Simmons Swimming & Diving defeated the University of New England Nor'easters 195-89 in non-conference action Friday night at the Holmes Sports Center. Simmons remains undefeated at 4-0 in dual meet competition. 


PLYMOUTH, N.H. ? Freshman Miriam Swisher (Albuquerque, N.M.) won two individual events and broke a 20-year-old pool record Saturday afternoon as Simmons College defeated Plymouth State University, 179-98, at the PSU Natatorium in the final women?s swimming and diving dual meet of the season for both teams.

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Freshman Miriam Swisher (Albuquerque, N.M.) won two individual events and broke a 20-year-old pool record Saturday afternoon as Simmons College defeated Plymouth State University, 179-98, at the PSU Natatorium in the final women's swimming and diving dual meet of the season for both teams.

Swisher won the 100-yard freestyle in 55.49 seconds, breaking the mark of 55.89 set in 1994 by Kriste Kleiner of Regis College. Swisher also took first place in the 50-yard backstroke in 30.18 seconds. She was one of three Sharks who were double-winners, as senior Amy Davis (Southbury, Conn.) captured the 200-yard free in 2:07.36 and the 50-yard butterfly in 29.98 seconds, and classmate Jen Collins (Trumbull, Conn.) touched the wall first in the 500-yard free (5:40.76) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:26.13).

Other individual event winners for the Sharks included junior Chloe Davis (Merrimack, N.H.) in the 50-yard breaststroke (35.72 seconds); freshman Maggie Kirby (Arnold, Md.) in the 200-yard butterfly (2:29.68); freshman Shylee Stewart (Eastham, Mass.) in the 50 free (25.61 seconds); and freshman Jordan Mattheisen (Seattle, Wash.) in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:49.89).

The Panthers were led by seniors Shannon Rogers (Beverly, Mass.) and Delia Foley (Londonderry, N.H.) Rogers finished first in both diving events, scoring 176.60 points on the one-meter board and 180.85 points on three-meter. Foley took first place in the 1,000-yard freestyle in a season-best time of 11 minutes, 51.92 seconds, and finished second in the 500-free with a time of 5:50.39. Rogers, Foley and classmate Jackie Viotto (Morristown, N.J.) were recognized prior to the meet on Senior Day.

Junior Sam Carberry (Shrewsbury, Pa.) also had a strong meet for the Panthers, placing first in the 200-yard backstroke with a season-best time of 2:20.46, and taking second in the 200 free in 2:11.25.  Freshman Jessie Blake (Portland, Maine) posted her best time in the 50-yard fly (30.04 seconds) to finish in second place.

PSU winds up the dual meet season with a 4-7 record while Simmons ends up at 10-2.  Both teams will be back in competition at the New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association (NEISDA) Championships on Feb. 14-16, held at the University of Rhode Island.
