Sharks Edged By Lyons in Swimming & Diving

WENHAM, Mass. -- Simmons Swimming & Diving defeated Elms College 190-70 and Gordon College 185-69 Saturday afternoon at the Bennett Center.

Although a hard day for the Sharks, Miriam Swisher (Albuquerque, N.M.), Shylee Stewart (Eastham, Mass.) and Jen Collins (Trumbull, Conn.) added five first place finishes to the Sharks score. Swisher took the victory in the 50 back, 100 back and the 50 freestyle with 27 individual points. Stewart finished first in the 50 breast and Collins finished first in the 100 free.

 

The Lyons came out strong winning the 200 Medley Relay right from the start.  Cathleen Pruden (Raleigh, N.C.) led the Lyons with 18 individual points, winning the 200 free and the 500 free. Katie Tyler (Hadley, Mass.) followed up with a win in the 50 butterfly and two second place finishes in the 100 free and the 50 free for 17 points.

 

"This is an unpredictable point in the season," said Head Coach Mindy Williams. Some athletes will respond well to the high volume of training that we've been doing.  Others won't.  The most important thing is that the athletes are showing a desire to race and to win, regardless of where they are physically. "

 

The Sharks return to the pool on Jan. 12 at St. Joseph's (Me.) at 1:00 p.m. before their final home meet again UMass Dartmouth Jan. 14.
