Swimming & Diving Wins Season Opener Over Owls

BOSTON, Mass. -- Simmons Swimming & Diving defeated the Westfield State University Owls, 160.5 - 127.5 in the teams 2013-2014 season opener Saturday afternoon at the Holmes Sports Center. 

WESTON, Mass. -- Simmons Swimming & Diving defeated the Regis College Pride 145-50 Friday evening at the Regis Aquatics Center. Simmons was led by senior Jen Collins (Trumbull, Conn.) who added 18 individual points and junior Joleigh Ferro (Pittsfield, Mass.), who added 13. 

BOSTON, Mass. -- For the first time in program history, Simmons Swimming & Diving will be traveling to the New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association (NEISDA) Championships this weekend with a full squad of 18 competitors. The Sharks, who won all nine dual meets against NEISDA opponents this season, will look to improve upon their 8th place finish in 2013.

The Sharks set a new school and pool record in the 200 Medley Relay swam by Miriam Swisher (Americus, Ga.), Shylee Stewart (Eastham, Mass.), Amy Davis (Southbury, Conn.) and Chloe Davis (Merrimack, N.H.). In the 1000 Free, sophomore Kevyn Lee (New York, N.Y.) took top honors by almost a minute and Kara Silva (Reading, Mass.) finished third for the Sharks. Lee also won the 500 Free by ten seconds over teammate Julie Nguyen (Salem, Mass.).

 

Simmons swept the top three in the 200 Free as senior Jen Collins (Trumbull, Conn.) finished first followed by Hillary Wong (Quincy, Mass.) and first year Sarah Price (New York, N.Y.). Swisher picked up her first collegiate individual win in the 50 Back, which set a new school and pool record, while A. Davis took first place in the 50 and 100 Fly.

 

Collins added another nine points for the Sharks with a win the 50 Free, followed by teammates Joleigh Ferro (Pittsfield, Mass.) in second and Price in third. C.Davis won the 100 Backstroke by two seconds and Swisher dominated the 100 Free with a win by just over three seconds.

 

In the diving competition, Rachel Lagasse (Hartford, Vt.) came in the third for the Sharks with 144.45 points and Brittany Ballard (Simsbury, Conn.) came in fourth with 109.45

 

"All fall we've felt as though we're going to have a good team this season, so it feels good to finally validate those thoughts with some times.  This is a great starting point for us," said Head Coach Mindy Williams.

 

The Sharks travel to Gordon College on Nov. 2 where they will face Elms College at 1:00 PM.
