Sharks Sail Past Monks, 175-76

BOSTON, Mass. -- After winning the 2012 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Swimming & Diving Championship on Sunday evening, the Simmons Sharks swept the GNAC Weekly awards, as junior Jen Collins (Trumbull, Conn.) was named GNAC Swimmer of the Week and freshman Kevyn Lee (New York, N.Y.) was named GNAC Swimming Rookie of the Week announced Monday by the conference.

Freshman Maddy McDonald (Westwood, Mass.) led all Sharks with 22 individual points, while senior Molly Bohannon (Westbrook, Conn.) and sophomore Chloe Davis (Merrimack, N.H.) each recorded 18 individual points to lead the Sharks to victory.

 

Bohannon finished first in the 200 Fly (2:26.81) and 500 Free (5:45.88), McDonald dominated the sprint freestyle events, finishing first in both the 50 Free (26.82) and 100 Free (57.67) and C. Davis was victorious in the 50 Breast (35.83) and 200 Back (2:23.53).

 

Junior Amy Davis (Southbury, Conn.) finished first in the 50 Fly (30.04), Joleigh Ferro (Pittsfield, Mass.) took home top honors in the 50 Back (31.15) and Kevyn Lee (New York, N.Y.) swam to a first place finish in the 200 Free (2:13.41). Isabel Stearns (Plymouth, Mass.) won the 1650 Free (21:55.98) for her first victory of the season and Kirsten Vickey (Taunton, Mass.) and Liz Zamagni (Chelmsford, Mass.) finished second in both of their individual events.

 

Lauren Rabideau scored 22 individual points for the Monks with her wins in the 200 Breast (2:38.26) and 100 IM (1:07.38) and second place finish in the 50 Breast (28.60). Allie Krasco finished third in the 200 Back (2:35.04) and Kiani Camire finished third in the 50 Free (29.33).

 

Sharks freshman Brittany Ballard (Simsbury, Conn.) picked up her first collegiate win on the 1-meter board, scoring 127.10 points, and Simmons won the 200 Medley Relay (C. Davis, Zamagni, A. Davis and Marissa Soucy (Mont Vernon, N.H.) by more than three seconds (2:04.82).

 

"Simmons had a big week with three meets in four days.  It could have been easy for our athletes to run out of steam by Saturday, but they really stayed strong and posted some really impressive swims, said Head Coach Mindy Williams."

 

The Sharks return to action on Wednesday, January 23rd at the University of Saint Joseph at 7:00 p.m. The Monks host Gordon College on February 2nd for a 1:00 p.m. start.
