Swimming Falls to UMass-Dartmouth, 132-104

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth?s women?s swimming team defeated the visiting Simmons Sharks, 132-104, in their first match of spring semester at the Tripp Athletic CenterWednesday evening.

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's swimming team defeated the visiting Simmons Sharks, 132-104, in their first match of spring semester at the Tripp Athletic CenterWednesday evening.

The Sharks dominated the 50 yard freestyle with a one two finish by freshman Maddy McDonald (Westwood, Mass.) in 26.47 and Amy Davis (Southbury, Conn.) in 26.85. Senior Molly Bohannon (Deep River, Conn.) finished second in both the 500 and 1000 yard freestyle and Chloe Davis (Manchester, N.H.) added a second place finish in the 400 yard IM and was just out-touched by Meredith Maki in the 100 yard backstroke. 

Simmons diver Rachel Lagasse (Hartford, Vt.) won the one-meter diving competition with 159.70 points for her first victory of the season and the Sharks 400 yard freestyle relay team of Hillary Wong (Quincy, Mass.), C. Davis, A. Davis, and McDonald finished first in 3:56.14. 

"We had some really exciting races tonight.  At this point in the season, we're focusing on optimizing race opportunity and getting New England qualifying times.  The team did an outstanding job of supporting one another," said head coach Mindy Williams.

Three Corsairs posted two wins apiece. Junior Katelyn Kidney won the 200 yard freestyle in 2:06.89, and the 500 yard freestyle in 5:40.71. Senior Meredith Maki took the 1000 yard freestyle in 11:40.53 and the 100 yard backstroke in 1:06.20, and senior Morgan Cooper won the 100 yard freestyle in 57.37seconds and the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:13.40.

Senior Maggie Conlon won the 400 yard individual medley in 5:04.78, freshman Caroline Corcoran took the 100 yard butterfly in 1:03.28, sophomore Brooke Garvey won the three-meter diving with 155.60points, and the 400 medley relay team of freshman Caissie Niles, junior Kerryn Kane, Corcoran and Conlon finished first in 4:36.03.

UMass Dartmouth's women improved to 4-1 with the victory, while Simmons fell to 5-4 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Eastern Connecticut State Saturday on Senior Day. The Sharks will host Regis College on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
