Simmons Edges PSU in Swimming and Diving

The Simmons Swimming and Diving team will open their 2011-2012 season this Saturday against Westfield State College and are looking to build upon their momentum from last season. After a disappointing first half of the 2010 season, the Sharks refocused during a mid-season training camp and were unstoppable for the remainder of the season, culminating in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship.

PLYMOUTH, N.H. –Simmons College showcased their superior depth Saturday afternoon defeating the Panthers, 148.5-131.5, in a women's swimming and diving meet at the PSU Natatorium.

It was a close meet the entire way, and PSU pulled ahead by two points, 123.5-121.5, with two events remaining. The Sharks captured the final two races to pull out the meet, wrapping up their regular season at 8-4, while PSU finishes the dual meet season with a 4-7 mark.

Sophomore Jen Collins (Trumbull, Conn.) was the top swimmer in the meet for Simmons, winning three individual events and swimming the anchor leg on the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team. Collins captured the 200-yard freestyle in 2:04.22; the 100-yard free in 56.15 seconds, and the 200-yard individual medley in 2:23.32. She was joined by freshmen Chloe Davis (Merrimack, N.H.) and Hillary Wong (Quincy, Mass.) and sophomore Amy Davis (Southbury, Conn.) on the meet-clinching 400-yard free relay team (3:54.73).

Also winning swimming events for the Sharks were junior Molly Bohannon (Westbrook, Conn.) in the 200-yard butterfly (2:23.91) and junior Liz Zamagni (Chelmsford, Mass.) in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:51.02).

Senior Lara Gruner (Center Barnstead, N.H.) and junior Amy Mulhern (Taunton, Mass.) paced the Panthers with two individual wins apiece. Gruner captured the 1,000-yard freestyle in a season-best time of 12:08.49, and came back to win the 50-yard free in 28.09 seconds. Mulhern posted a career-best time of 31.21 seconds to capture the 50-yard backstroke and followed with a season-best 2:21.22 to take the 200-yard backstroke.

Other winners for PSU included senior Brittanie Bradley (Scarborough, Maine) in the 50-yard breaststroke (36.46 seconds); sophomore Delia Foley (Londonderry, N.H.) in the 500 free (season-best time of 5:44.88); and senior Nicole Brodeur (Claremont, N.H.) in the 50-yard butterfly (28.80 seconds).

The two teams split the diving events, with sophomore Lea Monahan (Avon, Mass.) taking the one-meter event by 0.05 of a point, and sophomore Shannon Rogers (Beverly, Mass.) winning on the three-meter board.

Plymouth State also began the meet by honoring its five seniors – Bradley, Brodeur, Gruner, Brittney Gondek (South Glastonbury, Conn.) and captain Brittany Shortell (Ansonia, Conn.).

Both teams have completed the dual meet schedule in preparation for the New England Championships. The Diving New Englands are at UMass Dartmouth next weekend, Feb. 10-11, and the Swimming New Englands are in White River Jct., Vt., on Feb. 17-19.
