Sharks Float Past Monks, 145-94

Simmons Swimming and Diving cruised to a 145-94 Great Northeast Athletic Conference victory over visiting Saint Joseph?s College of Maine on Saturday. Senior diver Amanda Dirksmeier (Marshfield, Mass.) set a new pool and school record of 237.15 in the 3-Meter diving, besting her old mark, set in 2010, by more than 10 points.

Senior diver Amanda Dirksmeier (Marshfield, Mass.) set a new pool and school record of 237.15 in the 3-Meter diving, besting her old mark, set in 2010, by more than 10 points.

"I am happy to see the team swimming fast. The athletes are being aggressive and getting hungry for faster times," said Head Coach Mindy Williams. "If they continue to swim like this, we will have a very strong finish to our season. Everyone has redefined their goals for second semester and they are holding themselves to a new standard."

The Sharks began the meet with a win in the 200-yard Medley relay, as Virginia Bette, Liz Zamagni, Nellie Jackson and Jen Collins swam to a time of 2:08.73. Bette later finished second in the 50-yard Free (27.57) and first in the 100-yard Backstroke (1:07.75) to score 13 points for Simmons.

Zamagni swam to a first-place finish in the 50-yard Back (37.09) and another win in the 200-yard Breast (2:48.25). Jackson earned second place in toe 100-yard Fly (1:09.39) behind teammate Molly Bohannon (1:06.77).

Collins posted a speedy 26.91 in the 50-yard Free, and was the only swimmer under one minute (59.85) in the 100-yard Free en route to both wins.

Other strong showings for Simmons were Bohannon's first place in the 1,000-yard Free (11:53.72), Dirskemeier's first place in the 1-Meter diving, and Rachel Lagasse's second place finish in the 1-Meter diving.

The Monks' Hannah Gajewski touched the wall first in the 200-yard Free ahead of Simmons swimmer Amy Davis (2:11.79), and swam to second place in the 100-yard Backstroke (1:09.65). Annie Roberts won the 50-yard Backstroke in 34.53.

With the win, Simmons earns their second GNAC dual meet win of the season. They will host Western New England College next Saturday, January 29 at 11:00am. The Monks will host Gordon College on February 5 at 1:00pm.
