BRIGHTON, Mass. – Simmons soccer (1-10-2, 1-8-2 GNAC) picked up its first win of the season with a 1-0 shutout over Anna Maria College (0-12-3, 0-11-1 GNAC) on Saturday afternoon.

The Sharks controlled the game from the opening kickoff and pressured the Amcat defense with a pair of early corner kick opportunities. Midway the period, the Sharks fired shot after shot on the Anna Maria goalkeeper before drilling the game-winner in the 29th minute.

A hard-shot attempt off the foot of graduate senior Riley Wasiuk caromed off the crossbar, but right back at the feet of first-year Lauren Krupnikoff. Krupnikoff was in perfect position to knock in her first goal of her collegiate career and put Simmons on top, 1-0.

Simmons appeared to add to their lead following back-to-back-to-back shots by junior Steph Mendoza and Wasiuk to begin the second half. But the Amcat goalkeeper Kortney Clark came up with big saves.

The Sharks did not let up and continued to look for the elusive insurance goal. But it was more than enough as Simmons held on for the win.

SIMMONS HIGHLIGHTS

  • First-year Lauren Krunikoff led the Sharks with seven shots, including the game-winner for her first collegiate career goal in 29th minute.
  • Junior Steph Mendoza and senior Riley Wasiuk recorded three shots with one on net each.
