Soccer's Early Goal Spoiled by Albertus Magnus' Pair of Second Half Tallies

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Simmons soccer (0-11-2, 0-9-2 GNAC) fell to Albertus Magnus College (6-4-3, 5-4-2 GNAC), 2-1, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action late Tuesday evening.

The Sharks were first on the scoreboard, striking in the 31st minute. Senior Olivia Hewitt sent a through ball between Falcons defenders to the foot of fellow senior Sydney Neumuth. Neumuth wasted little time, driving inside and firing one past the Albertus Magnus goalkeeper.

Simmons took the one-goal advantage into the halftime break. But when the two teams returned for the start of the second, the Falcons saw an increase of energy and scored the equalizer off a throw-in in the 60th minute.

The match proceeded with high intensity for both teams, however Albertus was able to find the game winner in the 79th minute of play.  Erina Ismaili sent a through ball to Vescera, who was making a streaking run. She took one touch, set herself, then blasted a ball to the far post to take the 2-1 lead. The Falcons held on for the remaining 11 minutes to secure the victory.

  • Senior defender Olivia Hewitt registered her first assist of her collegiate career on the game's first goal.
