Soccer Falters Against Rivier University

BRIGHTON, Mass. – Simmons soccer (0-3-1, 0-1-1 GNAC) dropped back to 0-1-1 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action following a 3-0 loss on Saturday afternoon.

The Sharks came out of the gate strong, maintaining possession early to set the tone of it. Moments after entering the game, sophomore Emma McEwan nearly put Simmons on the board first, spring up field towards an open net but was dragged down by the Rivier goalkeeper Julia Cafferty.

However, Simmons was unable to convert the penalty kick opportunity. Graduate senior Riley Wasiuk's attempt deflected off the right post to keep the game scoreless.

Midway through the first period, the Raiders broke up the tie game. Coming up the nearside of the field, Kaylee Magoon ripped a shot into the upper right corner of the net, just out of reach of Simmons goalkeeper Julia Rodgers. Minutes later Magoon, added an insurance goal, scoring in the 35th minute to send the Raiders into the break with the 2-0 lead.

When the teams returned to the field at the start of the second half, the Sharks hung tough. Sophomore Kayla Noonan challenged the Raider goalkeeper, firing two shots on net, while McEwan also kept pace with a shot on goal.

The Raiders scored one final goal in the 86th minute with Emily Lizotte heading in corner kick from the foot of Jordan Butters.
