Soccer Battles Mitchell to a 1-1 Tie to Begin Conference Play

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Simmons soccer (0-2-1, 0-0-1 GNAC) battled Mitchell College (2-0-1, 0-0-1 GNAC) to a 1-1 tie to open Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action, Wednesday afternoon.

The Sharks began strong, outshooting the Mariners, 10-7 in the first half. However, nothing was finding the back of the net until the waning minutes of the first half. Sophomore Courtney Sweeney buried her first collegiate career goal in the 40th minute of the contest to put Simmons in front, 1-0.

When the second half commence, the Sharks continued to maintain their lead despite an offensive attack by the Mariners. Roles reversed in the second half with Mitchell outshooting the Mariners, 10-7, before they were able to score the equalizer with seven minutes remaining in the game.

But Simmons was not going away. Moments after the Mariners tied the game, graduate senior Mia Nikolakopoulos ripped a shot towards net that was blocked by the defense. A minute later, sophomore Emma McEwan tried to take the lead, but Mariner goalkeeper Gemma Landry came up with the save.

Simmons sophomore goalkeeper Julia Rodgers played the entire 90 minutes in goal, registering four saves.
