WELLESLEY, Mass. – Opening the 2023 campaign on the road, Simmons soccer (0-1) fell to a tough Wellesley College (1-0) squad, 4-1, on Friday afternoon.

It was a tight battle between the two schools throughout the majority of the first half. Despite the Blue maintaining possession over 60% of the time in the period, the Sharks defense kept Wellesley from findning the back of the net. Sophomore goalkeeper Julia Rodgers was outstanding in net registering three saves allowing the Sharks to draw first blood towards the end of the first half.

With 10 minutes to play in the period, graduate senior Riley Wasiuk was awarded a penalty kick, drawing a foul in the box. Wasiuk took full advantage of the free shot opportunity and buried the ball into the back of the goal to give Simmons a 1-0 lead heading into the intermission.

However, when the teams returned to the pitch at the start of the second half, Wellesley was quick to knot up the score a minute into the period. Two minutes later they added another pair of goals to take a 3-1 lead and they did not look back.

  • Graduate senior Riley Wasiuk broke a 0-0 tie in the 35th minute with her fourth collegiate career goal on a penalty kick.
