Soccer Blanks Norwich to open Conference Play

BRIGHTON, Mass. – Simmons soccer (1-2, 1-0 GNAC) picked up its first win of the 2021 season and opened Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at 1-0 after shutting out Norwich University (0-2, 0-2 GNAC), 2-0, on Saturday afternoon. 

Junior captain Izabella Warren broke up the scoreless tie in 13th minute, firing a rocket from outside the 18-yard box into the upper left corner of the net to put the Sharks on the scoreboard. The Sharks continued to keep the pressure on the Cadets. In the 23rd minute, senior Nell Spencer found the back of the net on a breakaway away goal add to the Simmons lead.

The Sharks had the upper-hand on the cadets all game, maintaining possession 56% of the time in the first half and 54% in the second. Sophomore goalkeeper Marita Nothacker earned her first win of the season tallying four saves.

SIMMONS HIGHLIGHTS

  • Junior captain Izabella Warren scored her first goal of the season in the 13' – for her ninth goal of her collegiate career.
  • Senior Nell Spencer's goal in the 23' was her first goal of her collegiate career.
  • The Sharks improved to 12-8-1 all-time against the Cadets, including 7-3-0 at home.
