Martin Gives Soccer 2-1 Victory at Regis (Mass.)

WESTON, Mass. -- Sophomore forward Cierra Martin (Rock Tavern, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal to give the Simmons University women's soccer team a 2-1 victory over host Regis (Mass.) this afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match at Regis Stadium in Weston, Mass. The Sharks win their seventh straight match for their longest win streak since they won eight consecutive matches during the 2004 campaign and improve to 7-3-0 and 5-1-0 in conference play, while the Pride fall to 5-5-0 and 3-4-0.

WESTON, Mass. -- Sophomore forward Cierra Martin (Rock Tavern, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal to give the Simmons University women's soccer team a 2-1 victory over host Regis (Mass.) this afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match at Regis Stadium in Weston, Mass. The Sharks win their seventh straight match for their longest win streak since they won eight consecutive matches during the 2004 campaign and improve to 7-3-0 and 5-1-0 in conference play, while the Pride fall to 5-5-0 and 3-4-0.

Martin gave Simmons the lead for good when she scored her fifth goal of the year, just 49 seconds after Regis had knotted the game at 1-1. Her marker gave the Sharks a 2-1 edge with 36:14 remaining in the game.

The Simmons defense and senior goalkeeper Lauren Williams (Bowdoinham, Maine) took over, holding the Pride scoreless, despite being outshot, 13-6, in the final 36 minutes of action.

Simmons got on the board in the 10th minute of the game when senior midfielder Cíara Forde (Quincy, Mass.) found the corner of the back of the net to extend her point-scoring streak to seven straight games with her team-leading 10th goal of the season, coming with 9:32 gone in the first half. Forde's seven-game point-streak is the longest for a Shark since Allie Megna (2007-10) also notched at least one point in seven straight contests from October 3-23, 2007. 

Simmons held a 1-0 edge going into halftime in an evenly played period that saw both teams attempt five shots apiece.

The Regis offense turned up the pressure in the second half and tied the match at 1-1 when sophomore midfielder Emily Lange (Ashland, Mass.) found the back of the net at the 52:57 mark of the second half. The goal was one of 17 second half shots for the home team against just five for the Sharks.

Williams was brilliant, earning the victory with nine saves for Simmons, while first year keeper Oriana Attridge (Westwood, Mass.) made four stops for the Pride.

The Sharks return to action on Wednesday, October 3 when they host GNAC rival Suffolk University at Daly Field for a 7:00 p.m. start, while Regis hosts Albertus Magnus College on the same night at 7:00 p.m.
