Berkman Leads Soccer over Albertus Magnus, 2-1

BOSTON, Mass. ? Senior forward Ali Berkman (Natick, Mass.) netted a pair of goals to match her career high and lead the Simmons College women?s soccer team to a 2-1 victory over visiting Albertus Magnus College this afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match at Winsor Field in Boston, Mass. The Sharks have won three of their last four matches to improve to 3-4-0 and a perfect 2-0-0 in league play, while the Falcons fall to 1-3-2 and 1-1-0.

BOSTON, Mass. – Senior forward Ali Berkman (Natick, Mass.) netted a pair of goals to match her career high and lead the Simmons College women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over visiting Albertus Magnus College this afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match at Winsor Field in Boston, Mass. The Sharks have won three of their last four matches to improve to 3-4-0 and a perfect 2-0-0 in league play, while the Falcons fall to 1-3-2 and 1-1-0. 

Simmons outshot Albertus Magnus, 23-11, on the day, while owning a 6-3 advantage on corner kicks. All three of the goals scored in the match came in the second half. 

Senior midfielder Victoria Russo (Braintree, Mass.) sent a corner kick into the far left post where Berkman collected the ball and fired it past the Falcons' keeper for the Sharks' first marker of the day at 59:10 of the second stanza. Berkman increased the Simmons margin to 2-0 when she uncorked a free kick from 30 yards out that sailed over the keeper's hands and snuck under the cross bar with 4:19 left in the match. 

Albertus Magnus cut the deficit in half when sophomore midfielder Victoria Lavery (West Haven, Conn.) possessed the ball just inside the box and fired a shot from the top left corner that found the back of the net, inside the far post, with just 88 seconds remaining in the contest. 

Senior keeper Briana Hayes (Manorville, N.Y.) earned the win for the Sharks, stopping six shots, while senior goalie Maria Case (West Haven, Conn.) made 10 saves for the Falcons. 

Simmons returns to action on Tuesday, September 22 when it hosts Westfield State University at 7:00 p.m. on Winsor Field, while Albertus Magnus heads to New London, Conn. on the same day to face Mitchell College at 3:00 p.m.
