CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - In an extremely evenly matched game, the Simmons College women's soccer team was edged by host Lesley University, 1-0, this evening at Edward Field in Cambridge, Mass. The Sharks fall to 2-4-0 on the season, while the Lynx improve to 3-3-0.

Despite Simmons holding a 9-4 shot advantage in the first half, Lesley was able to net the only marker of the night in the 16th minute of play. Both teams finished the contest with 12 shots and four corner kicks apiece.

Lynx first year midfielder Jordan Mitchell (Sachse, Texas) sent a cross into the center of the box to find junior back Julie Essick (Boerne, Texas), who finished with a leaping one-timer for her first marker of the season and the only score of the night at 15:07 of the opening half.

The Sharks looked to score in the first half when senior midfielder Tegan Dougherty (Northfield, N.H.) redirected a corner kick from sophomore forward Kashka Gammon (Nashua, N.H.) with a header in the 36th minute, but her shot went wide of the goal. Senior forward Greer Gilbert (Falmouth, Mass.) also looked to knot the contest, but her shot with just 35 seconds left in the first half was stopped by the Lesley keeper.

Senior goalie Briana Hayes (Manorville, N.Y.) made eight saves for Simmons, while sophomore Lilly Donovan (Newburyport, Mass.) and senior keeper Jackie Berard (Coventry, R.I.) each played a half and each made a pair of saves to share the shutout for Lesley.

The Sharks return to action on Saturday, September 19 when they host Great Northeast Athletic Conference rival Albertus Magnus College at 12:00 p.m. on Winsor Field, while the Lynx host #15 Brandeis University on the same day at 12:00 p.m.
