Soccer Edged by Smith, 1-0, in Season Opener

BOSTON, Mass. ? Senior goalie Briana Hayes (Manorville, N.Y.) stopped nine shots for the Simmons College women's soccer team, but it wasn't enough as visiting Smith College came away with a 1-0 victory in the season opener for both teams this evening on Winsor Field in Boston, Mass. The Pioneers improve to 1-0 on the year, while the Sharks fall to 0-1.

BOSTON, Mass. – Senior goalie Briana Hayes (Manorville, N.Y.) stopped nine shots for the Simmons College women's soccer team, but it wasn't enough as visiting Smith College came away with a 1-0 victory in the season opener for both teams this evening on Winsor Field in Boston, Mass. The Pioneers improve to 1-0 on the year, while the Sharks fall to 0-1. 

Smith owned a 15-10 shot advantage and held a 5-1 total in corner kicks. 

Following a scoreless first half, first year Isabella Ayvaz (Waldwick, N.J.) carried the ball into the right top corner of the box before sending a cross to the left post, where sophomore Jordan Isaacs (Weston, Conn.) put the ball in the back of the net for her first tally of the season for the Pioneers. The score came at 61:07 of the second stanza and was also good for Ayvaz' first collegiate point with the assist. 

Sophomore keeper Shelby Hall (West Springfield, Mass.) recorded her seventh career shutout with four saves on the night for Smith.

The Sharks will be in action again on Saturday, September 5 when they head to Wellesley, Mass. to take on Wellesley College at 2:30 p.m., while the Pioneers fly to Claremont, Calif. to play Claremont McKenna College on September 4 at 7:00 p.m.
