BOSTON, Mass. – Junior forward Greer Gilbert (Falmouth, Mass.) netted the only goal of the afternoon to give the Simmons College women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over visiting Johnson & Wales University today in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference tilt on Winsor Field in Boston, Mass. The Sharks have won three of their last four matches and improve to 4-5-2 overall and 3-2-0 in league play, while the Wildcats fall to 7-5-1 and 3-1-1.

Simmons outshot Johnson & Wales, 17-8, and owned a 7-2 advantage on corner kicks.

Junior back Issy Verrilli (Naugatuck, Conn.) set up the game-winning tally when she served a ball from just before midfield into the 18' box, where Gilbert collected it off a defender. The Wildcats' keeper came off her line and Gilbert made a move around her, before unleashing a low shot from the right side into to the left corner of the net. The marker was her fourth of the season and gave the Sharks a 1-0 edge with 19:11 gone in the first half.

Neither team was able to put together a quality scoring chance for the remainder of the match.

First year back Nadine Simpson (Bellmore, N.Y.) put a pair of shots on net for Johnson & Wales.

Junior keeper Briana Hayes (Manorville, N.Y.) stopped three shots to record her third shutout of the season and 11th of her career for Simmons, while junior goalie Alexa Rose (Lancaster, Pa.) turned away four of five shots in the first half of play for the Wildcats, before classmate Alex Place (East Greenwich, R.I.) made three saves in the second half for the visitors.

The Sharks will return to action when they travel to New Haven, Conn. to take on GNAC opponent Albertus Magnus College on Wednesday, October 8 at 4:00 p.m., while Johnson & Wales hosts Suffolk University on the same day at 4:00 p.m.
