Wheaton Tops Sharks, 3-0

BOSTON, Mass. ? Simmons soccer, who received 119 points and one first place vote, will look to make some noise after falling in the GNAC title game last season to Lasell College. 

NORTON, Mass. ? The Wheaton College women?s soccer team held its opponent scoreless for the second-straight contest as the Lyons defeated Simmons College, 3-0, in non-conference action on Wednesday evening at Mirrione Stadium.

BOSTON, Mass. -- Simmons soccer received five All-Conference nods as the Great Northeast Athletic Conference announced the 2012 Women?s Soccer All-Conference Teams Monday afternoon.

NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College women's soccer team held its opponent scoreless for the second-straight contest as the Lyons defeated Simmons College, 3-0, in non-conference action on Wednesday evening at Mirrione Stadium.

 

Sophomore Julie Beyar buried her first marker of the season in the 25th minute, while classmate Julia Cipriano and senior Kristina Braga also added tallies for the Lyons.

 

Wheaton outshot Simmons, 24-4, in the contest and held a 5-2 margin in corner kicks. Senior forward Desh Perera (Reading, Mass.) recorded three shots on goal, highlighted by a pair of scoring chances in the ninth and 21st minute.

 

Sharks' sophomore goalkeeper Briana Hayes (Manorville, N.Y.) collected 11 saves in the loss. Hayes has compiled double-digit saves in four games this season for Simmons. Wheaton sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Thacker stopped three shots for her third shutout of the season.

 

In the 25th minute, Beyar netted her first-career goal in a Wheaton uniform on a free kick from about 25-yards out. Cipriano made it 2-0 in the 61st minute finishing a cross by senior co-captain Abby Tobin for her fourth marker of the year.

 

Braga put the game away in the 72nd minute putting home Alex Leonardi's initial shot that ricocheted off the crossbar. Braga pushed her team-leading points total to 13 (6g, 1a) with her marker this evening.

 

Wheaton (5-3-1) hosts WPI in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) matchup on Saturday, September 28 at 1 p.m. With the win, the Lyons improved to 7-0-0 all-time against Simmons. The Sharks (4-4) take on Emmanuel College this Saturday at 11 a.m.
