BOSTON, Mass. -- Sharks soccer had their chances but the SUNY New Paltz Hawks controlled the field and went on to win 6-0 on the opening day of the Sharks Invitational Saturday afternoon. Simmons (0-2) junior Kristyn Heuslein (Manchester, N.H.) led the Sharks with six shots while Hawks goalkeeper Stephanie Vega was perfect in net, stopping all 10 shots she faced.

In the first, the play was pretty even, with the Hawks holding a slight advantage in shots, 9-5, and corner kicks, 3-1. Twenty-three minutes in, Shelby Kondelka found Samantha Abravanel in the box and beat Simmons freshman Briana Hayes (Manorville, N.Y.) to take the lead. Less than ten minutes later, Beth Bowling took the ball down the left line and slipped a high shot past Hayes to double the score. The Sharks defense stayed strong and the half ended, 2-0.

In the second, the Hawks dominated as Gabby Martino, Chelsea Weir, Emily Rokitowski and Sarah Painter each tallied for SUNY New Paltz, beating Sharks goalkeeper Amber Verill (Windham, Maine). The Sharks outshot the Hawks by one in the second half, 12-11.

Both teams return to the field tomorrow for the second day of the Simmons Invitational, with SUNY New Paltz taking on DeSales University at 12:00 p.m. and the Sharks hosting Western New England at 2:30 p.m.
